In the meantime, what can you do? According to the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention (June 1999), half of all colon cancers can be prevented through lifestyle changes and widespread screening. Recommended behavioral changes include 1) Regular screening after age 50; earlier if there is a family history of colorectol cancer. This can reduce the risk of dying from colon cancer by at least 33 percent.
2) Regular exercise. The report states that physically active adults are half as likely to develop colon cancer as sedentary adults. Consider a daily workout of 30 minutes of vigorous exercise or one hour of brisk walking.
3) Cut down on red meat. Eating one serving per day of red meat is associated with a 50 percent increase in risk.
4) Other: Maintain a healthy weight, eat more vegetables, limit alcohol intake, and don't smoke.
Our family has made some positive changes. We are on our way to a healthier lifestyle!
