BLOOD-CLOTS and CANCER

Posted Mar 11 2009 12:00am
RON HAS A BLOOD CLOT! We didn't know it, but cancer patients are at risk for this problem. Last Thursday Ron started to have pain behind his kneecap. It felt like a "charley horse" that wouldn't let up. We thought it was just a pulled muscle or cancer related pain. But, it got steadily worse. So yesterday, our daughter took him to the doctor. Tests at the hospital confirmed their suspicions: Blood clot. Scary Stuff! Ron was given two shots at the ER last night, and another at the doctor's office this morning. We have been tasked with giving him two shots a day; he is also on oral medication.
Other news: Ron got a second opinion and that doctor doesn't think he has Shingles. So, we are in a "wait and see" mode. Ron has appointments the next two days for a CT of his lung, some lung functioning tests and radiation mapping. Ron's primary doctor has ordered bedrest but cleared him to go to these appointments (I could use a little bedrest of my own! LoL ).
UPDATE 4/3/09: Ron still has his blood clot and is on blood thinners. However, he is moving around a lot better these days. His primary doctor told him it is okay to walk, dance or even run if he wants to!
UPDATE 7/15/09: Ron still has his blood clot. It may take up to a year to resolve. He continues to take medication and has his blood monitored weekly.
UPDATE 10/25/09: The blood clot has not gone away yet. He is still on blood thinner.
UPDATE 12/10/09: Ron still has his DVT but he is hopeful that it is dissolving. The swelling has gone down some.
