Becoming an Advocate for the American Cancer Society

Staci1219When my mom was diagnosed in 2003 I became involved with the American Cancer Society 's (ACS) Relay For Life (RFL) in Upshur Co. in Gilmer, TX where I lived. It is a smalllittle town in Texas but that year we raised over $21,000. After the RFL was over we started getting ready for the next year's Relay. We went for training and I started getting info and statistics about different kinds of cancer and funding. I already had a notebook full of information I gathered up from the meetings I'd been to. Looking over all this I had talked to the district person in charge from the local office and told her I wanted to do more because I felt like my voice needed to be heard.

There was an ACS weekend in Dallas, TX soon after I talked to her about wanting to do more. The Higher Plains Division, which was my area, was divided up in (plus many more states were there) there were about 20 of us from my area that went and I met new people from different areas, got new ideas and had a blast along the way! I got loads of information and I also signed up for the ACS' Cancer Action Network ( ACS CAN ). I think only had $5 or $10 to sign up left to sign up with, but I have renewed every year since 2003.

ACS CAN is the nation’s leading cancer advocacy organization that is working every day to make cancer issues a national priority. Many of the most important decisions about cancer are made outside of your doctor’s office. Instead, they are made by your state legislature, in Congress and in the White House. ACS CAN empowers regular people to be part of the growing national movement that is fighting back against cancer.

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, is holding lawmakers accountable for their words and their actions. We demand that our leaders not only talk about fighting cancer but take real steps toward decreasing the number of people suffering and dying from cancer.

Being an advocate for the ACS has been an awesome experience for me. I have sent numerous emails to our Congress, signed many petitions on different issues because I want to make sure they know how important this issue is at hand and that we have enough funds. If anybody is interested in becoming an advocate for the ACS you can contact me for details or go to

In conclusion, I will continue giving my support to each and every one of you on WhatNext and if anyone needs me on here do not hesitate to contact me. I say a prayer for y'all every day and I fight for y'all every day, and I will continue to do so until we find a cure for cancer because cancer never sleeps and until the people in Washington D.C. get tired of listening to me and start funding support for us I'm gonna still send my emails and sending letters and petitions :)

God Bless y'all
Stay Strong and Don't Give up!
