Australia funds national prostate cancer research center

Posted Dec 12 2008 3:38pm

According to a report in The Age this morning, the Australian government has announced the dedication of $7.5 million in funds for a new national prostate cancer research center.

The report appears to carry some factual inaccuracies. Prostate cancer is in fact the second leading cause of male deaths from cancer (after lung cancer) in Australia, and Australia does not appear to have “twice the mortality rate for prostate cancer than the United States.” We assume that either the speakers were misquoted or someone provided inaccurate information.

The web site of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia states that, “Each year in Australia, close to 3000 men die of prostate cancer — equal to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually. Around 18,700 new cases are diagnosed in Australian every year.” The current male population of Australia is about 10.4 million.

The new Prostate Cancer Research Centre will be based at the Epworth Hospital in Melbourne.
