Another abiraterone acetate trial update

Posted May 24 2010 12:00am

We note that the second Phase III clinical trial of abiraterone acetate in asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic patients with metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who have not had either chemotherapy or ketoconazole therapy is now fully enrolled (as of last Friday).

There had been rumors that this trial was not enrolling patients as fast as the original Phase III abiraterone trial (in patients who had relapsed after docetaxel-based chemotherapy), so we are particularly pleased to see that this trial is now fully enrolled, even though it may be disappointing for other patients who had hoped to enroll in this study.

The trial information on the ClinicalTrials.gov web site suggests that the initial results of this trial may be available some time in 2011, even though the trial will continue through at least 2014.

At least two other interesting studies with abiraterone acetate are now enrolling patients, however:

Clearly Cougar Biotechnology is already starting to explore the potential of abiraterone acetate much earlier in the treatment of prostate cancer.
