Androgen therapy is well established for anemia due to underproduction. Various androgens have been studied and the literature is now old, with most studies being in the 1970s and 19080s. The combination of an androgen and a corticosteroid reduces anemia in one third of patients with aplastic anemia. Androgens are also effective for anemia of renal insufficiency. Androgens are not used much now that erythropoietin is available. There is no literature to support combined use with Aranesp.
