A Suspect

Posted Jan 11 2009 4:19pm
The doctor advised this morning that all bacterial cultures continue to come back clean, but they want to continue antibiotics (currently cefepime and vancomycin ) until either the symptoms cease or they identify a culprit from viral cultures.

The prime suspect is an adenovirus, which looks like this:

Adenovirus is suspected because it commonly causes many of Vivienne's current symptoms: gastroenteritis, rashes, recurrent fevers, runny nose.

This morning, the doctor advised that there are no serious complications from an adenovirus and that if this is the culprit (and we still do not know that to be the case), we would simply let it run its course. On the other hand, I read about the adenoviruses when I came home and saw a number of potentially serious complications such as pneumonia, with compromised immune patients being at highest risk.

Of course, I am not second-guessing the doctor. The chest x-ray showed no chest congestion or other problems, and they are constantly listening to her and checking her out. She is in no distress - just tired, restless and a bit fussy, with no appetite. We, and they, are taking good care of her.
