tumor markers rising again

Posted Aug 07 2011 1:50am

Yesterday I met with my oncologist after my July appointment got a bit sidetracked by visits and life on the outside (of cancer).

The story is a bit confusing as my last CT/PET scan seemed to indicate no new fires to put out, but then my tumor markers have been climbing steadily. My oncologist said sometimes this can happen in response not to progression but in response to the cells’ shedding antigen as they die off from the treatment. But, she has ordered another CT/PET scan.

I feel lucky to be doing as well as I am. It is wonderful to be able to get out, even though it requires mobility assistance, and I try to do whatever I can on my good days. Because this disease has a nasty habit of sneaking up on us with little unwelcome surprises, it’s a good idea to do whatever we can when we feel decent enough and have some energy. Between the disease and the treatment it is not uncommon to be extremely limited in what we can enjoy.

So, for now, it’s give ‘em hell. Ok, give ‘em hell after my nap.
