Susan G. Komen for the Cure has contributed much in the battle against breast and cervical cancer, but the company's recent choice to pull its funding of Prepared Parenthood has drawn critical fire. Susan G. Komen CEO Nancy Brinker insists that the media's portrayal of events has been “a gross mischaracterization.” Resource for this article:
Susan Komen attempts to deflect heat from Planned Parenthood decision Cash still sent to three of 19 clinics
All of the Prepared Parenthood clinics will continue to get financing from Susan G. Komen for the Cure until 2012 is over without any problems. However, 16 of the 19 clinics will lose financing at the end of the year totally. The three that will still get financing will do so “because they are the only services accessible to low-income women in their communities,” as reported by Brinker.
An exception given to one
According to USA Today, the Denver chapter Prepared Parenthood clinic is one of the three that will continue to get funding. It was given an “exception” to last from April 1, 2012 to march 31, 2013. After the time is up, the Susan G. Komen personnel will discuss if it should be granted again.
The Denver chapter of Prepared Parenthood explained that Colorado made budget cuts to breast and cervical cancer screening recently, which is why the announcement that it will continue to get funding is such good news.
“The community is looking to Komen Denver Affiliate to provide the services the state can no longer fund,” the statement reads.
Unrest in Connecticut
Via Facebook, a representative of Susan G. Komen’s CT affiliate expressed concern that any investigation of redirected funds be resolved easily. Critics hope that investigation will lead to a quick resolution of the problem of Susan G. Komen withholding cash that was once given without reservation.
“We understand, and share, in the frustration around this situation. We hope that any investigation prohibiting Planned Parenthood from receiving Komen grants is promptly resolved,” noted the statement.
Brinker’s comments
Defunding the clinics has caused a ton of anger from the public. During the last two days, donations have doubled to Komen though, as reported by Brinker. Brinker did not explain where the money came from.
“We haven’t defunded Planned Parenthood,” she said. “We still have three grants that we’ve committed to, at least through another year until the end of the grant cycle.”
