Survivorship research

Posted Jul 01 2009 5:29pm

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute has released two studies that should be of interest for survivors.

The first is reporting that long term survivors of Hodgkin's lymphoma who were treated with radiation have a significantly increased risk of stroke and transient ischemic attack.

The second is research of interest to pediatric survivors, particularly those who have had brain tumors, about late recurrences and long term ramifications of treatment.

Having attended the N.C. Survivorship Summit last week I'm certainly not pleased to see these reports but I am very glad to see that more survivorship research is being done. Remember, this research can not be completed without survivors like you and me, so if the opportunity presents itself let's do what we can.
