Saint Agatha and breast cancer

Posted Feb 10 2009 12:31pm

Did you know there was a saint specifically for breast cancer?

There is little reliable information about Saint Agatha but she was martyred in 250 AD.

According to legend Agatha was young, rich and beautiful and led a life dedicated to God. Roman Emperor Decius announced an edict that all Christians were required to offer a pagan sacrifice to the emperor. If they refused they were subject to torture and death. Anyway, the local magistrate Quinctianus planned to blackmail Agatha in exchange for not charging her. Agatha refused Quinctianus and was beaten, tortured, imprisoned and her breasts were crushed and cut off. She was reportedly healed by St. Peter and was imprisoned again. Finally she was rolled on hot coals and when she was near death there was an earthquake and the magistrate ran away. Agatha is said to have thanked God for ending her pain and died.

Today is her Memorial or feast day.
