New research is focusing on the blueberry as a possible treatment modality for preventing the spread of the onerous triple negative breast cancer. Why is this important? Triple negative breast cancer is known to be aggressive and poses a challenge for treatment because it does not respond to treatment options available for breast cancer that is positive for, or has sensitivity to, estrogen, progesterone or HER2.
The City of Hope here in southern California is conducting studies on the blue fruit for its cancer-halting properties. Clinical trials on human subjects is not yet in place, though studies on animals is looking promising at showing that the application of blueberry extracts to cancer cells causes the cells to die.
