Prozac, not just for breakfast anymore

Posted Jan 15 2009 7:53pm
I can't tell you how many people I know who were put on antidepressants after their cancer diagnosis. All this time I thought it was just to keep us from crying all the time. Then I read some research that showed that people taking antidepressants were more likely to complete their treatment regimen. That was all interesting but this one takes the cake.

Dr. Dan Peer of the Department of Cell Research and Immunology at Tel Aviv University is reporting that combining Prozac with doxorubicin increases the effectiveness of the doxorubicin by more than 1,000%. This study forcused on colon cancer.

In animal models, a mild doxorubicin-fluoxetine treatment combination slowed down tumor progression significantly. These results suggest that pairing Prozac with chemotherapeutic drugs to curb drug resistance warrants further clinical study, says Dr. Peer. His research was just published in Cancer Letters, and his suggestions are now listed as recommendations in the latest version of Cancer Encyclopedia. You can read more detailed information here.
