One year later: I released more than a book

Tuning in to a fabulous year; static included

It’s been a little over a year since I released my book, From Incurable to Incredible. Today, I’m going to be on a radio talk show (1 p.m., Bill Cunningham, WLW-700 for you local folks) to discuss what my year has brought. I was on the show last summer, and he asked me to come back a year later. I took him up on the offer.

A lot has happened in the past year; some joyful some sorrowful. I lost some dear friends to cancer; my friend Nevine’s passing hit me hardest. And I’ve ridden the roller-coaster every three months with my scans; a couple times learning my treatment at the time wasn’t working, and most recently that it’s keeping it in check.

And I’ve had some amazing experiences that surpassed anything I’d ever imagined. I traveled to Utah for the first time and was treated to a free, healing retreat with other breast cancer survivors from Image Reborn . My family and I later rode mules into a little-traveled area outside Bryce Canyon – a big highlight for me. In October, I was humbled to be named a Pink Power Mom finalist by Bright Starts, a company that makes baby toys and supports breast cancer survivors who make a difference for others and their families. They generously gave each finalist $5,000 to the charity of their choice. I chose Dr. Vincent Tuoy’s breast cancer vaccine research at Cleveland Clinic.

I overcame my fear of public speaking and being in the media, learning that people respond to you when you just be yourself. My travels with the book took me from small towns like St. Marys, Ohio. to bigger meccas like Houston. I get excited when I do Amazon searches and see the book come up as one of the top sellers. (Try “cancer survivor stories” and see what happens.) More than 18,000 visitors from 126 countries have come to this blog. Along the way, I met so many amazing people, including people who graciously contributed their stories to the book and enough additional miracle survivors to fill up another book.

On a personal level, I’ve watched my lovely daughter mature into a young lady, with all the joys and challenges puberty brings. I revel in both, knowing God’s grace is keeping me here to take care of her during this important time. My husband left a job he was in for 16 years to take a new job for a large health care organization. I believe there are no coincidences that he was led to work in health care as I have for so many years. We have our moments, but I know we’re a team and that I could not do any of this without his support and love.

It’s been a spectacular year all in all. I want to thank all of you for being a part of it. This blog brings me joy and purpose, especially when I hear from you. It makes all the difference knowing our connection has made a difference in your lives. Thank you for being a part of this community.
