A few days ago I published a piece about the family who has been told that they can not deduct baby formula from their Health FSA even though the mother has had a bilateral mastectomy.
Just to really make you crazy, U.S. Representative
Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) has proposed a bill that would
make expenses for pet care tax deductible.
According to reports - Act H.R. 3501, entitled "Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act", would "institute a change within the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to permit pet owners to deduct up to $3500 from their taxable income expenses they occurred in providing adequate pet care." Routine pet care expenses would be covered.
The HAPPY Act was introduced on 31 July, 2009, and was written based on research supplied by the American Pet Products Association's National Pet Owners Survey and was then referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means.
This makes me want to vomit, for hours non stop! We are in the middle of fighting over whether PEOPLE should be able to get health care and this is actually taking the time of legislators in the halls of government.
I know writing this will brand me a pet hater but please give me a damn break! People are not allowed to deduct medical expenses for their own care until they reach 7.5% of their taxable income and we want to allow people to deduct Fido's flea dip?
I have two cats that I adopted from a shelter and we have paid significant vet bills in the past but until all Americans are sure that they will not lose their house if they get cancer no deduction for per expenses.
