If you've not yet read, there is a new study out that shows that tamoxifen may cause a rare but potentially dangerous side effect, an increased risk of an aggressive new tumor.
This report is based on an observational study and not a controlled, randomized study that gives strong data and even the authors of the research are saying that the benefits of using tamoxifen outweigh the risks of the secondary tumor.
Before you run to your oncologist demanding that you make a change read the
article in the New York Times. The case, unfortunately, is not quite so clear.
Apparently even the doctor who wrote the report say that these results should not change current practice.
Keep in mind ladies that there are hundreds of studies out there and rarely does the doctor say that no changes should be made based on their results. Keep taking your medicine and have a conversation with your doctor. Remember that tamoxifen has been proven to decrease recurrence rates and spread of the cancer and that's what we're all hoping for.
