I don't generally run obituaries but as I have written twice about Dr. Jerri Nielsen Fitzgerald it only seems appropriate to announce her passing at age 57.
When she was stationed at the South Pole in 1999 she discovered a lump in her breast. A biopsy was performed with the support of staff at the station and guided by physicians over the internet.
She treated herself with anti-cancer drugs delivered during a mid-July airdrop until she could be rescued in October.
She is survived by her husband, parents and three children and many survivors who saw her as a courageous role model.
