In pain after surgery? Could be this guy's fault.

Posted Mar 15 2009 4:28pm

What is the matter with this world? Dr. Scott S. Reuben, an anesthesiologist in Mass has admitted that he fabricated much of the data underlying his research. This guy wrote 21 journal articles, many of which were published in Anesthesia & Analgesia.

The drug giant Pfizer underwrote much of Dr. Reuben’s research from 2002 to 2007. Many of his trials found that Celebrex (an arthritis med) and Lyrica (for nerve pain), were effective against postoperative pain.

Pfizer of course is very disappointed but one has to wonder whether the results that were falsified were because of payments that the doctor received.

Baystate, (the hospital the doctor was affiliated with) investigators determined that Dr. Reuben had concocted data for 21 studies, and the health system asked the journals in which those studies were published to withdraw them.
