Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby

Pregnancy is an incredible experience. Waiting for baby brings excitement and joy and nervousness and any number of other rare and magical feelings.  However, as we all know, pregnancy also marks the time that we need to take extra special care of ourselves; to eat well and drink well and take the proper supplements in order to ensure our pregnancy, and child, is getting the best care possible.  News on the alternative healing front gives us further insight into what to do, and what not to do, while pregnant:

1. Eat a High Fiber Diet: Researchers have found that maintaining a high fiber diet during your first trimester can reduce the risk of developing preeclampsia, a potentially fatal condition that affects both the mother and the unborn baby.  According to the study authors, adding an extra 5 grams of fiber a day (or approximately two slices of whole-grain bread) reduces a woman’s risk of developing the disease by 14 percent.  As an added benefit, fiber also lowers blood pressure, increases good cholesterol, and helps to ease the constipation often associated with pregnancy.
