Geraldine Ferraro

Posted Aug 26 2009 11:10pm
Nine years ago Geraldine Ferraro was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and told she had three, maybe five years to live. Now nine years later she is helping to raise awareness about the disease and treatments. Ms. Ferraro believes that Velcade, developed since she was diagnosed has saved her.

She had already beaten the odds by living with multiple myeloma for six years, but when she started getting intravenous infusions of Velcade in 2004, the disease went into remission. As a result, she was well enough to receive a stem cell transplant, which sometimes triggers long-term remission.

In 1984, while serving her third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, she was picked by Democratic Presidential candidate Walter Mondale to be the first woman to run for Vice President on a major party ticket.
