Many, many studies have reported that being overweight or obese negatively effects breast cancer. It has been shown that obesity increases breast cancer risk, results in an initial diagnosis of more advanced breast cancer, and worsens breast cancer outcomes. However, the mechanism or mechanisms behind this link between obesity and breast cancer is not fully clear. While some studies have suggested that changes in obesity hormones like adiponectin and leptin are involved, other mechanisms appear to be involved as well.
In an attempt to better understand other possible mechanisms linking obesity to breast cancer, researchers recently explored the relationship between fat cells in breast tissue and breast cancer cells. In this breast cancer research study , investigators cultured breast cancer tumor cells together with mature fat cells and examined changes in both cell types. The results of this study showed that
Breast cancer cells altered the fat cells such that they became more active and produced more cell enyzymes and inflammation factors.
After entering the more active state, the fat cells then modified the breast cancer cells to a more aggressive state, which promotes tumor progression and invasion.
This is a fascinating and potentially important breast cancer research study. The interaction between breast cancer tumor cells and fat cells appears to be in the form of a viscious circle. The breast cancer cells first activate the fat cells and then the fat cells 'return the favor' by making the breast cancer cells more aggressive. This would lead to greater invasion of the breast cancer tumor, which would potentially result in more interactions with additional fat cells in the breast tissue. Because overweight and obese individuals generally have more fat cells in their breast tissue, this interaction between tumor and fat cells might be amplified. This interaction might also be one of the factors responsible for the link between obesity and breast cancer. More and more it is evident that maintaining a healthy body weight is an important part of our fight against breast cancer.
