A spokesman for ex-Premier Ehud Olmert says tests show his prostate cancer has worsened, and he needs immediate treatment.
Ehud Olmert became prime minister of Israel in 2006 and announced his intention to resign in September 2008. He joined Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in the founding of a new party, Kadima, in 2005. After Ariel Sharon had a stroke in 2006 Olmert became Israel's acting prime minister. The new party they formed, Kadima, won national elections in March of 2006 and Olmert was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 4, 2006.
Olmert's spokesperson said a decision on treatment would be made as soon as Olmert returns from the U.S. Options include radiation, surgery or a combination.
