The Senate has recently passed legislation backed by Sens. Richard Burr and Kay Hagan, both of North Carolina, preventing the military from
dismissing claims related to water contamination pending completion of two studies by the Centers for Disease Control.
Some military members have been awarded partial disability from the VA and John Hartung is one of them. According to the Jacksonville Daily News,
Hartung’s doctor stated in a letter to veteran’s compensation board that Hartung’s ailments were more likely than not caused by exposure to toxic water.
“My doctors believe me 100 percent and are behind me 100 percent,” Hartung said.
The chemicals in the groundwater that are of the highest concern are benzene, PCE, TCE, methylene chloride, DCE and vinyl chloride.
Benzene is known to cause leukemia and methylene chloride has been linked to cancers of the liver, lung and pancreas. Vinyl chloride is known to cause angiosarcoma of the liver,
DCE (dichloroethene) has a history of causing problems in the nervous system, TCE (trichloroethene) is worse with links to cancers, and is though to possibly be the cause of some Gulf War syndrome issues including Parkinsons like disorders and ALS. PCE (perchlorethylene) is another known carcinogen as well as having effects on the central nervous system.
If you were stationed at Camp Lejeune at any time between 1950 and 1990 and are now dealing with medical issues you should definitely check out
