Daniel Hauser, the Minnesota teenager whose mother once took him and fled the state to avoid chemotherapy has completed that treatment. He is scheduled to finish his radiation treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma in early November.
His tumor is gone and when radiation is over so is the presence of the court. At that point there will no longer be medical neglect and the court will no longer need to monitor the family.
Daniel looks great, you can even see hair growing back in the photo (courtesy of Associated Press photographer Steve Muscatello), pretty good for a kid who has only been finished with chemo for a few weeks.
Interestingly his parents "considered" whether radiation was necessary since the chemo had proven to be effective and went as far as to have three second opinions. Daniel is quoted as saying he didn't really want the radiation and is glad that's nearly over as well.
I hope Daniel grows up to be a healthy, strong young man who at some time appreciates and gives himself credit for what he's been through. I hope that he's able to talk to some fellow survivors who can tell him that nobody "wants" radiation, or chemo but we do what we've got to do to survive. Not to sound too cheesy but you've got your whole life ahead of you kid, have a good time.
