A drizzle of olive oil protects against breast cancer

Posted by Misia

According to new research led by scientists from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain, olive oil protects against breast cancer by launching triple attacks against tumors: it thwarts a gene that drives the growth of breast tumours, it switches off proteins that help cancer cells stay alive and, finally, it protects DNA from damage that can lead to cancer.
By carrying out experiments on rats in order to better understand the link between an olive oil-rich diet and lower odds of developing various cancer, researchers found that olive oil has the power of launching multiple attacks on the tumors, so stunting their growth and protecting DNA against dangerous damage. The study adds to evidence that olive oil and a Mediterranean diet affect our bodies in a significant way, highlighting the positive impact that eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, fish, whole grains and healthy fats and low in red meat and dairy products may have on our health.
