Dr. Barbara B. Shadden is a University

Professor in the Program in Communication Disorders at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She served as Director of this program for 20 years, stepping down only recently. Dr. Shadden has served leadership roles in the Arkansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and ASHA,
and has been a regional representative for the National Aphasia Association for more than 15 years. She is the author or co-editor of 6 textbooks, 57 articles, and 17 book chapters, the majority of which deal with adult neurological
communication disorders and their effects on the person with the disorder and those close to them. In recent years, Dr. Shadden has been particularly
interested in the effects of loss or impairment of communication on one’s sense of self, one’s life story. Her work is enriched by serving for more than 25 years as facilitator of a stroke support group and by her own personal experiences with aphasia since her husband’s stroke in 1997.
