Tankless Heaters A Metaphor for the Energy of the Future

Posted Dec 09 2008 2:48am

What will our energy systems be like in the future? How will energy companies regulate or monitor our usage? And, what kinds of energy will we use?

Let's take a look at the tankless water heater

Tankless heaters as opposed to storage heaters are designed to help the consumer use hot water only when it is needed. The phantom energy that is lost in a storage tank is not wasted and so there is savings all around.

Perhaps, our future energy consumption will be handled in much the same way. Of course, on a much larger scale. In his book,"Hot, Flat, and Crowded", Thomas Friedman creates a futuristic look at a symbolic 'black box' that will not only regulate the energy needs of our homes, but also our vehicles. Scaling down energy when it is not needed, and choosing from an array of energy options (solar, wind, etc)that are least expensive and more efficient for the consumer.

That's an idea for tomorrow.
