Recovery

So a week after my first surgery I was released to go home. The Doc ordered a walker for me and prescribed physical therapy. The occupational therapists said I was fine and did not need help, especially because I had my mother to help me. Thank goodness for that too, because I had a really hard time walking at first, especially before I got the brace, and I have to go up a flight of steps to get to my apartment. Mom would take the walker up the stairs and then come back down and walk behind me as I walked upstairs. At first it was really hard, but after I got the brace it became much easier. And physical therapy helped a great deal. A few weeks later I was no longer using the walker, just a cane.

I slept downstairs in my living room the first few weeks, until I became more comfortable with stairs. I have a one bedroom townhouse. My mom slept in my room and I slept on an air mattress. Then when I was confident enough to start going upstairs we switched. It was really great of my mom to stay, she left her job, my dad, and her mom and sister back east to come take care of me. I think she liked me needing her to take care of me, but obviously didn't like the reason why I needed her. She kept the apartment clean, something I am not very good at! She carried all the groceries upstairs and she did my laundry. She even came to work with me, when I was finally allowed to go back to work, which was about 6 weeks after my surgery. Mom stayed for a couple more weeks then she went back home.

It was great to be able to go to work. luckily for me I had a job to go to. The pilot I worked on before my surgery got picked up and started shooting 6 weeks after my surgery so I never even missed any work. And my boss let me come back. Most people would have hired someone new the moment they heard about the brain surgery. I worked with a lot of good people. Work was hard though, my leg still not 100%, I did have to ask for help, which is something I don't normally like to do. But everyone at work was very helpful and everything seemed to be going fine...
