Parkinson’s Awareness Month Statistic #1: Depression Is Real

Depression can co-occur in people with certain illnesses and diseases but that Parkinson’s disease has the highest rate after people who struggle with eating disorders? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, a study in 2002 reported that 25% of cancer victims experienced depression, stroke patients 10-27%, heart attack survivors and individuals with HIV were 1 out of every three, diabetics 8.5-27%, those with substance abuse 27%, people with eating disorders came in at 50-75% and Parkinson’s patients came in at 50%.

If you’re wondering why you’re singing the blues, talk to your doctor. It may be more than a seasonal thing or a rainy day.
