Only people can protect the environment. That is why Takasago U.S.A. constantly improvises to make its management practices friendlier not just to the environment but to people as well. Those efforts have paid off, not least in the form of commendations for our occupational safety and health policies.
As one of the Takasago International Group's hubs in the Americas, Takasago U.S.A. has in recent years made the environment, health, and safety (EHS) a main focus of corporate operations. We consider the environment in particular a top priority. All employees are, needless to say, scrupulous about sorting garbage into paper, plastic, glass, and whatever before throwing it away, and metal drums are recycled at the factory.
Electronic equipment like personal computers as well as batteries and fluorescent tubes are also recycled in an effort to reduce the toxic substances released when such items are discarded. Chemical substances no longer needed at the factory or the lab are all taken away for incineration by a dependable service provider, which eliminates the risk of soil contamination.
A full range of eco measures and programs in place
In 2009, in an effort to raise awareness about energy use and the importance of environmental conservation, Takasago U.S.A. launched an Energy Management Team, which directly oversees energy use and ecological programs (specifically recycling). Ongoing training of building management staff at all locations has instilled a greater sense of responsibility about energy and the environment.

Progress made in saving energy by taking bold action, raising employee awareness
Electrical power use was cut by 5% in 2009, use of natural gas by 27%. These reductions were achieved by limiting or optimizing running of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment - boilers, cooling apparatus, air conditioners, compact heaters - in both the office and the fragrance plant. Further reductions were achieved by posting notices next to every light switch in every location urging staff to conserve energy.

Cutting back power use with energy-saving technology
At the flavor plant, reductions in nitrogen oxide (NOx)emissions and natural gas use have been realized by installing a new, more energy-efficient model of industrial steam boiler. Furthermore, the lighting system is now equipped with automatic controllers with built in motion sensors and phototubes, while large load circuits have been separated off in a bid to curb excessive power consumption.
At the fragrance plant, reductions in electricity use have been achieved by adopting a variable frequency drive design for large-scale motors and upgrading the warehouse lighting system.
When purchasing energy, Takasago U.S.A. is careful to select suppliers that buy energy produced with clean technology. It also takes part in an energy program in partnership with energy suppliers and the New Jersey Office of Clean Energy.
When launching new projects for the future, the company gives first priority to adopting energy-efficient, eco-friendly equipment. It is also pursuing research on the potential of alternative energy sources.
A little ingenuity goes a long way
The company e-mail system has been enlisted in the effort to conserve natural resources. To raise environmental awareness, all e-mails automatically include the message, "Save paper. Don't print e-mails unless absolutely necessary." In addition, the use of styrofoam cups, which are bad for the environment, has been forbidden at all company locations; instead mugs bearing the Takasago logo have been issued to all employees. As a means of conserving water, meanwhile, office washrooms are being equipped with water- saving valves. Takasago U.S.A. intends to keep up these efforts to combat global warming and save energy.
Feted by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Takasago U.S.A. has won awards from the state of New Jersey and the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration for its employee safety and health policies - testimony to the company's high standards. We plan to continue our commitment to eco-friendly, people-friendly management.
