China Bans Plastic Bags! And Walmart is Selling Recycled Grocery Bags!

Posted Oct 30 2008 3:24pm

The other day I was checking out at Walmart. I had my four year old grandson with me, and was standing next to another woman who asked the cashier what the recycled bags hanging by the counter for groceries were made from.

He kept ignoring her question. I figured he didn't know. So, I told her that they wer made from plastic bottles. He gritted his teeth and said he hadn't wanted to say anything. So much for Walmart associates!

Anyway, another semi-big news story in the world of the environment and health this week is that China has banned plastic bags. This is supposed to help change the fact that there is a large garbage bag the size of Texas sitting on the ocean floor.

What ails our oceans

Giant, floating toxic stew

At the start of the Academy Award-winning movie "American Beauty," a character videotapes a plastic grocery bag as it drifts into the air, an event he casts as a symbol of life's unpredictable currents, and declares the romantic moment as a "most beautiful thing."

To the eyes of an oceanographer, the image is pure catastrophe. paper or plastic? Neither!
