What happened, what could happen and what can happen

How you focus on time has a great deal to do with how you perceive the world around you.  I think there seems to be maybe 3 main orientations ( probably more but at least these three),

  1. What happened.  Living with the regrets and resentments of the past.  A mix of guilt, anger and jealousy that keeps you replaying the same old things over and over again.  Life is a rerun and you are always being hurt.
  2. What could happen.  Anxiety and fear about the future.  Waiting for things to fall apart.  Threat is everywhere.  Vigilance is common sense.  You tend to medicate the present in anticipation of the future.
  3. What can happen.  A sense of opportunity.  Optimism based on what is real.  Faith and a treasuring of the reality of life as a gift.

Maybe all of us are a mix of all 3, but if number 1 or 2 tend to define your experience maybe you need to think, not about what you see, but how you see the world around you.
