Voices of recovery: One lady’s story

Posted Sep 05 2011 9:39pm

I met a lady a couple a days ago who told me her story (she wanted her name to remain private) :

She had worked hard to fulfill her dreams. She wanted to work with kids with emotional problems. She went through school and after 10 years of experience she was promoted to being a group home director. A couple of weeks after getting the job she was taking a 13 year old kid to the doctor. She was hit head on by a drunk driver. The drunk driver was killed. One side of her body was crushed, her back broken in several places, plus injuries to virtually every internal organ. She was supposed to die but refused. In the succeeding years she lost everything. Everyone she counted on for support left. She lost a house. Financially she was forever ruined. Her pain was past pain. A doctor told her pain was on the level of people with terminal cancer. Not suprisingly she ended up addicted to pain meds. And finally the pain meds were starting to destroy her body. When I met her she was trying to detox from the meds. She was trying to save her life. Her detox was as bad as any I have ever seen. She fought depression of a level I found hard to imagine. Suicide had seemed a good option more than once. I will never forget what she told me the first night we talked. “God is not through with me yet.” She told me she wanted to become a peer support specialist someday. “Maybe if I can make it I can help someone else to believe they can make it too.”
