The Basketball Coach

Posted Oct 23 2008 6:06pm

The psychology instructor had just finished a lecture on mental health and was giving an oral test.

Speaking specifically about manic depression, she asked, “How would you diagnose a patient who walks back and forth screaming at the top of his lungs one minute, then sits in a chair weeping uncontrollably the next?”

A young man in the rear raised his hand and answered, “A basketball coach?”

My husband watched basketball all weekend.  I half paid attention while typing on the computer.  After the first couple of games, I decided I’m not completely alone in my moods.  These guys go from one extreme to the other in a matter of minutes.  No one broke out the antidepressants, anti-psychotics, or even the benzos.  I think I am feeling much better about myself.
