Pet Peeve

Posted Aug 23 2008 11:54pm

Hello,
I recently attempted to adopt a cat I saw at Petsmart, which was placed there by Save our Strays. After about 5 telephone calls talking with Dorothy, she vacillated between denying the adoption because I have two dogs, (because the cat was "afraid" of dogs), and denying because I have a 16 year old cat that I allow to go outside at times when he wants to. I explained to Dorothy that my cat never used to go outside, but it seems he's taken a keen interest in it lately. I have the feeling that he's trying to make the most of his remaining time.
Anyway, my rebuttal to Dorothy was that I will take care of this cat in whatever manner is required. I will keep her away from the dogs if she is bothered by them, and I would not let her outside. She insisted that I could not manage keeping one cat in the house, and allowing the other cat to go outside. I think that is absurd, at 46 years old I certainly know how to let one animal out and keep the other in. I also learned that the foster home has a dog, and that this particular cat was being kept in one room of the house when it was not on the shelf at Petsmart.
In reading through the website, I found the results of the Adoption Council meeting, which stated that SOS needed to focus on placing the animals, not denying adoption.
I agreed to pay $80 for a stray cat, all of my animals are rescues, and I find it completely ridiculous that a responsible pet owner like myself is denied adoption. I am offended that I am deemed not worthy to take care of a cat - obviously if my cat has made it to 16 years I know how to care for a cat.
I love my animals, and wanted to add Rosie the Russian Blue to our family. I believe that I am responsible for making sure that my pets have a great life - I take very good care of them and consider their wants and needs at all times. I am so upset by this denial that I will no longer shop at Petsmart, and I intend to encourage my friends (and my website readers) to boycott Petsmart with me.
Fuck off and die,

NVAM*
