Peer support in Tennessee

Posted Feb 25 2011 4:49pm

On March 1 hundreds of mental health advocates will converge on the Tennessee State Legislature to talk to their representatives about the health of the mental health system. If you have not made plans to go I hope you will.

The immediate future of peer support may be decided this session. There are 46 peer support centers in Tennessee with a budget a little over $5 million. As much as $4 million of that budget may be on the chopping block. Hopefully the words of many people who know first hand the importance of peer support centers will make a difference.

The Tennessee Mental Health Consumers Association (composed of and run by mental health consumers) stands to lose as much as $500 thousand from their advocacy programs, and recovery education programs. The results could be catastrophic for them.

As a guiding rule it seems when mental health funds are cut they are never added back later. The toe hold that peer support has in Tennessee is in great danger. Please add your voice to the voices of others. Everybody makes a difference. I hope I see you at the “Day on the Hill.”
