If I may speak freely... your current pdoc is an idiot. Bipolar disorder and Cyclothymia are mutually exclusive diagnoses.
Cyclothymia:
Diagnostic Criteria ( DSM-IV™ ):
1. At least two years of symptoms, including numerous Major Depressive and Hypomanic symptoms.
2. At no time in the two years of symptoms, has there been a symptom free period that lasted two or more months.
3. At no time in the two years of symptoms, has there been a Major Depressive, Manic or Mixed Episode.
4. The symptoms are not from another disorder or a substance.
5. Clinically significant distress from symptoms,or impairment in work, social,or other areas of important functioning.
Bipolar:
Bipolar I Disorder is a mood disorder characterized by one or more manic episodes, possibly alternating with major depressive episodes.... Bipolar II Disorder is a mood disorder with a clinical course, that is characterized by at least one Major Depressive Episode(s) and at least one Hypomanic Episode(s).
I hope this makes sense. I storngly suggest getting a new pdoc who can do more to help you with things.
Best,
Ann

I am thinking about finding a different pyschiatrist because the one I go to now is just making stuff up as he goes along I believe. First off, he has changed my diagnosis numerous times, but always led me to believe that I am manic depressive. When we first met, he diagnosed me as bipolar, then changed it to schizoaffective disorder with bipolar after I asked him if someone could have both at the same time (this was around the time that Britney Spears was released from the mental hospital), and now he says I am still bipolar (if you can say that I am)but that I now suffer from cyclothmic disorder. Another thing is is that he never keeps track of what he prescribes me. Thankfully I have a great memory when it comes to meds or I would be totally messed up right now. The thing is is that he has always placed me on an antipsychotic, and I was wondering if that was something usually given to someone who supposedly suffers from cyclothmic disorder? I have been on Abilify, Geodon, Haloperidol, and am now on Seroquel XR. I have also been on lithium, clonazapam, Cymbalta, Venoflaxin (I think that is how you spell the other new anti-depressant), and probably some other meds that I can't think of right now.
