I worked as a nurse in the psychiatric field less than a year ago, and as of then, adderall was a drug that was only prescribed for ADDand ADHD. It was the last treatment option when the pt. did not respond to any of the other meds. Bipolar is treated in many different ways and with many different medications. Usually, a mood stabilizer(many times an anti-seizure drug) and an antidepressent. Bipolar pts are at a higher risk for developing drug and alcohol addictions; either induced by the pts need to self medicate or/and the actions they engage in while in a manic episode. An effective Medication regime to treat Bipolar takes time and patience by both the doctor and pt.; there are so many different drug combinations used, and the med. must reach a therapeutic blood level before it is determined to be effective or not. Bipolar meds are used to stabilize the mood, by minimizing episodes of mania. Adderall does the opposite of that.
