my six year old son has had severe constipation since he was 3. he got ripped once and then after that he wanted to hold it in. he was hospitalized when he was four. now he doesnt bend over to hold it in he just cant go he just leaks. i recently started taking him to a phycologist and she diagnosed hin with odd but she is the one who mentioned studies have found that some kids with severe constipation are bipolar. Is this true and how do you test to know if he is bipolar?
Well although I am sure the doctor can do tests to see if his Seritonin and/or dopimine are unbalanced, typically it is a psychologist or therapist that must diagnose that. It is typically determined by behavior which could include long term constipation although that is not the first thing that make therapists think the person has Bipolar Disorder. I would definitely take him to see a Primary care Physician but if that fails to accomplish anything substantial, take him to see a therpaist.
I have never heard that constipation is a sign of bi-polar disorder. The meds, that you are put on for this disorder usually causes severe constipation and leaves you feeling miserable. But your child needs to see someone about the constipation, mine had it until he was about the same age and the main problem was he was using too much dairy products in his diet.
