Distracted Driving is Driving me to Distraction

Posted Sep 12 2008 11:52am

Rob's up at the crack of afternoon, and out the door to go to work! Yay! His boss hasn't called him for 3 weeks or so. His boss is not very demanding, but I thought maybe he stopped calling because Rob doesn't manage to get to work on time. Rob works with his favorite thing in the whole world - cars. Actually, he mostly cleans up, mows grass, shovels snow, puts tools away, and washes cars... but it's a start.

Crap, 8:00 pm and Rob just called to tell me he's done more damage to my car. He backed into a pole again. He began blaming the same "blind spot" that messed him up last time he backed up into a pole. I reminded him that if he pulled into the spot without hitting the pole, all he has to do is back up without turning the wheel 'til he's out. I told him the same thing about 50 times when he had his temps and had such trouble backing out of our garage, but I refrained from saying this to him. I ask how many people are in the car with him, 2. Are they distracting him? No! It's not that! He just forgot about backing up the same way. Rob says he'll pay to fix all the dents (3 or 4 now I guess) before he buys his own car. He says, that's very responsible of me, isn't it? I agree. He only blamed it elsewhere once and then took responsibility for it himself. Amazing.

Meanwhile, I don't think I can wait till he buys a car - I sure don't want it delayed any longer while he spends his $ fixing mine! My pretty, little Mini is getting beat to shit!

Rob came home at 11:30, snatched up his meds and wrote me a note - sleeping at friend's. I call him up on the cell, I need my car in the a.m. for grocery shoppping. Instant anger. I agree to wait till noon or so for him to come back and we'll go together. I despise shopping after 9:00 a.m. when everyone else is out there too. Dammit. Having possession of my own car to do my own thing is not a priority anymore and not worth invoking the wrath of Rob (with subsequent meltdown). Helping Rob buy his own car however, is at the top of my to do list.
