Dealing with depression: hold others tight

Posted Oct 24 2010 4:13pm
  • Dont believe it- be suspicious
  • Hold others tight

Depression thrives in loneliness.  It thrives in isolation.  One of the first things it tries to take away from you is your sense of connection with others.  It tells you that they dont really make a difference for you and even worse that you dont make a difference for them.  It tells you that you have no common experience and that the life and possibility they seem to have offers no hope to you.

Depression also narrows your vision and destroys your judgement.  As a kid told me once, “It makes you stupid doesnt it….”  Other people offer corrective lens to see what we cant.  They serve to give lie to the everything, always, and no hope lies of depression.  They also help us to notice the possibility of blessings and things to be grateful for.  They help to bring perspective and balance.

And they encourage and give you a place to lean.  They can help hold your hope.  And they can help to keep you safe when you cannot do so for yourself.

Isolation is a high risk behavior for depression.  Hold others tight.
