Can you changey your own brain chemistry enough to heal bipolar?

Posted by William741

Im wondering if a person can change his/her own brain chemistry enough to heal bi polar.  Also, how does the medical community measure brain chemistry.  We hear alot about eating different to change brain chemistry but how much is the influence?  How much can meditation influence brain chemistry as well?  Any studies to share?

Thank You for your great website,

Regards,

William,I usually don´t respond to this forum because, frankly, almost everyone here has bought into the psychiatric 'theory' of meds for life.  Usually the questions center around, 'What time of day is best to take my meds?' Or, "Which anti-depressant goes best with which mood stabilizer?' But you seem to be a truth-seeker, so I´ll do my best....Ready?First, I´m not sure if you are aware of it, but there is absolutley no hard science behind the chemical imbalance theory.  In other words, there is no scientific proof at all that bipolar disorder is caused by some sort of biological defect.....ZERO. That is why psychatrists are unable to detect bipolar disorder through any sort of testing...because there is nothing biologically wrong with you.And please, don´t beleive me.  Instead, check our Robert Whitaker´s book, Mad in America.  Or Dr. Peter Breggin´s Your Drug May be Your Problem.Second, people do heal from bipolar disorder. That is a fact.  As for me, I had one episode of hospitalization (where I thought I had, in fact, died). That was 13 years ago. I have never relapsed and never sought psychiatric help.   So, you might want to check out my YouTube channel in your search for answers, bipolarORwakingUP.  If you want you can write me, personally at bipolarORwakingUP@gmail.com and I´ll send you my e-book, A Quiet Mind, for free.It tells my story of how I healed and how, because of my experience and a ton of research, my wife and I were able to help my niece heal as well. After 3 episodes over a 2 month period, she is meds free, psychiatry free and relapse free for two years now.  And, more than that, she is grateful for her episodes, as am I. For both of us, going into pscyhosis amounted to a spiritual awakening of sorts. Good Luck with your research,Sean Blackwell - YT: bipolarORwakingUP

I haven't bought in to meds for life because maybe it is possible to change our chemistry but there have been scientific studies that show biological (or genetic) links with bipolar.  Adoption studies and twin studies.  (Brain scans show significant differences in people with bipolar, especially those who have had repeated psychotic episodes but I suppose it could be argued they are the results of early stressors):

Children with a birth parent with bipolar are 5 to 10 percent more likely to develop bipolar and identical twins with bipolar are 75% more likely to share the illness than fraternal twins.

PLUS:

call it genetics, bio-chemistry or whatever:

when you are psychotic, anti-psychotic medicine simply WORKS

when one gets knocked out involuntarily from regular life for possibly weeks and months: why exposing someone to extreme stress which BPD psychosis can cause?  PLUS: there is no ideal path to go - it all depends on your own predispositions, your experiences and what works for YOU!

Hi William,

I am about to start a program with my psychologist called "The Compassionate Mind". It uses a mix of DBT/CBT/Mindfulness to help you become more compassionate towards yourself and your condition and by using mindfulness this can help keep you 'in the moment' rather like meditation. I've not started it yet so cannot tell you how helpful it is but whilst I do take medication I would much rather be able to deal with my highs and lows in a more mindful manner with the aim of coming off medication one day.

All the best and take care :)
