Trauma of any kind can trigger bipolar disorder, including illness or life events.  I have heard of steroids bringing out mania before, but not antibiotics - but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.  Often bipolar disorder will manifest itself at a "young man" age - late teens, early twenties.  My advice for you is to get more than one opinion before accepting this diagnosis.
