From a recent interview with Florida geriatrician E. Rawson Griffin III
![]() How far have you seen people go to stay alive, even when it may not be in their best interest? I've seen so many patients tortured. I've seen patients who are 90 years old that were in the hospital for six months after 13 operations in agony and pain with no benefit. I've seen patients over 100 years of age in the ICU [intensive-care unit] on ventilators, struggling and hurting. I mean, there comes a point where where's the humanity in that. I'm 100 percent in favor of prolonging life. But we have crossed a line somewhere where we're prolonging death. |
