Posted Oct 17 2008 12:02pm
The Illinois Department of Public Health fined the Woodstock Residence nursing home $300,000, concluding that the improper administration of drugs caused the deaths of five facility residents. The full 130-page report is available here.
According to the report, Marty Himebaugh's (the culpable employee's) co-workers told investigators that she often bragg ed about giving sedative drugs to the residents to keep them calm. She administered the drugs to residents whom she said "had lived too long." "She won't make it through the day . . . I made sure of that." With respect to some residents with Downs Syndrome, Himebaugh allegedly said, "Those people aren't meant to live that long. They are meant to die in their teens, and I'm going to help him along."
Both Himebaugh and her supervisor Peggy Whitlock are facing criminal charges.
