To listen to the National News you'd think every single person in the Midwest is buried in snow. Well, not us in the upper Midwest city of Duluth, Minnesota. The storm only grazed us. All we got was lots of wind and a 1/2" of snow. However, we are getting the bitter cold that followed the system that brought 20 inches of snow to the Twin Cities only a two hour drive to the south of us. This morning's commute was bitter cold. You can see the water vapor rising off the Big Lake this morning. The temp was -14F (-26C) with a -30F (-34C) windchill. By far not the coldest temperature I've biked in. But it may be the coldest temp I've biked in during the month of December. We don't usually see below zero temps like this until January. It was no problem today. After many years of this, I seem to have the clothing figured out. I was very comfortable on the bike today. Tomorrow's forecast is calling for an air temp of -22F (-30C) in the morning. If it actually reaches that, it could be the coldest weather I've ever commuted in. Or close to it.
The coldest weather I've ever ridden in, other than during a commute, is -28F (-33C) in my first Arrowhead 135 back in 2007. I have to tell you, -14F feels pretty good compared to -28.
