The local bicycling club sponsored by Twin Ports Cyclery , VeloDuluth , has an annual New Year's Day Ride. Over the past 8 years I've made it out for the ride 6 or 7 times. It's usually frigid cold. This year it was just below the freezing mark with temperatures expected to drop rapidly and wind gusts of 40 mph predicted. The temps never did drop and the winds were more like 17 or 18 mph. Really quite pleasant for this time of year.
Winter teased us again with another 1 inch of snowfall overnight. Between the fresh snow, the wind wind chill forecast, and perhaps a dwindling membership, only eight hearty souls started the ride. Past years have seen twenty to thirty riders for this ride. VeloDuluth sponsors a successful CycloCross team. Jeanne Fleck, on the right, will be racing for the USA Cycling's Cyclocross National Championship in Madison Wisconsin next weekend. She will be racing in the Masters Women 45-49 group. She has had a very good season and can win this event. Good Luck Jeanne!
Anyhoo, that's the start to my New Year. A total of 20 miles ridden so far in 2012....many more thousands to come.
