Trading the bike for skis

Posted Dec 25 2010 7:16pm
After having no luck with the snow conditions for snowbiking yesterday, I switched to cross-country skis for today. I started skiing way back in 1978. It was my favorite outdoor winter activity...that is until I bought the Surly Pugsley in 2006. Since bringing the Pugsley home I think I've only skied two, maybe three times in 4 winters. That's how fun the Pugsley is to ride when you have access to miles and miles of winter trails.
However, I've been itching to skis more. Today was the perfect excuse since the snowbiking conditions are not good and skiing conditions on the local trails is great. Duluth has many, many kilometers of groomed trails in the city. I hit the Piedmont trails today. Most of this trail system is groomed for classic skiing.
These trails have some spectacular overlooks of Duluth, the Duluth Harbor, Wisconsin, and Lake Superior.

I only did about 7 km today. I remember how sore I get when I haven't skied in awhile. It uses so many different muscle groups. Some of those muscles don't get worked very often. Those will be sore tomorrow. It is a great way to get out in the woods on a beautiful winter day.

I never complain about snow. I feel so out of touch sometimes when everybody around me is whining about the snow. I love winter, and I love snow!
