The official unofficial announcement of the 2010 Tour das Hugel

Posted Oct 08 2010 2:27pm

For those who like to punish themselves on a bike, the Tour das Hugel deserves your attention. The free annual 100 mile ride covers Austin’s toughest hills, including 10,000 feet of climbing. This year it will be on Saturday, November 13, 2010, starting at 7:00 AM under the Mopac bridge on Lady Bird Lake.

The ride is “organized” at the most grass roots level with no sponsors and limited support so that riders are encouraged to support themselves. In fact, the organizers aren’t that interested in promoting the race beyond those inclined to ride up a lot of hills.

We are not promoting this ride or encouraging or recommending that people ride this ride, but we merely intend to provide friendly help to riders who would ride anyway. We offer an online gathering place for riders to connect with each other and with their supporters. We intend to speak with authority on reporting what others have said, not to dictate or require what others must do.

Along those lines, as we are not offering services, we ask nothing in return. There is no charge to ride this ride, which takes place on public roads. Just as we don’t encourage others to ride, we don’t restrict anyone from riding. Beware of inexperienced riders!

New to the das Hugel is some support from Nelo’s Cycles who will be staffing some rest stops. They’ve also gotten wacky this year by setting up a Facebook page in addition to their no-frills informational website .

One of these days…
