The Bong Bridge

Posted Aug 12 2009 10:32pm

Here's a picture you've never seen on my blog. I tend to stop at the same spots and take pictures of the same scenes for my blog over the past 3.5 years. Today I stopped and snapped this picture from spot along Skyline Drive I've never stopped at before. From the road it looks as if any potential view would be blocked by trees. I discovered that wasn't the case.

This bridge is referred to by locals as "The Bong Bridge", strange name. It's short for The Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge. It's my main route over to Wisconsin since it has rideable shoulders and a separated pedestrian walkway, my prefered method of crossing.

None of the locals can answer the one big question I have about the bridge. And I've asked many people who have lived here a lot longer than I have. Why was it built with such a huge curve? From what I can see it could easily have been built as a straight shot. Thus saving a lot of money in material costs due to a shorter span. Can anybody answer this question??

Anyway......summer arrived today. We had a near record cold July. Days in the upper 70's or above where non-existent. All the mornings were in the 40's and 50's. Perfect weather in my book. I don't like it hot. Today we had a high temp of 86F degrees. It felt strange to have hot weather in mid-August and not yet be acclimated to it.

One more day of this heat and then it starts to cool down again. Could these two days have been our summer?
